Anxiety is one of the leading mental illnesses plaguing the world today, and it steadily seems to be on the rise. This illness can occur as a result of several other conditions such as depression, trauma, and even stress. When looking into the treatments for anxiety, usually, a combination of different methods prove to be quite effective. The different therapy methods for the treatment of anxiety are:


As the name implies, this method of treatment is self-imposed. This simply means managing or handling anxiety at home without the aid of medications. Although this method of treatment is recommended for mild cases of anxiety. There are some recommended techniques and exercises that are applicable to this method of anxiety treatment; they are:

Techniques for Relaxation: There are certain techniques that can be employed to help one relax, especially when one feels the rise of anxiety. These include yoga, meditation, deep breathing, long baths, etc.

Managing Stress: Stress is one of the triggers of anxiety and learning to manage this stress usually proves very effective in reducing anxiety. Ways of managing stress include: being organized, keeping to deadlines in order to avoid pressure, taking time off from work and other tasks, etc.

Physical Exercise: Physical exercises have been known to help improve moods through the release of chemicals in the brain. Also, physical exertion helps with letting off pent up tension and energy.

Positive Reinforcement Exercises: These are exercises primarily targeted at eliminating negative thoughts and emotions and replacing them with positive ones. These exercises include: picturing yourself in a happy place and writing out the negative thoughts and then writing out positive thoughts to cancel out the negative.

Having A Support System: Having someone to talk to many times go a long way in helping with anxiety. This helps you to let out all of the stored up feelings of anxiety and helps you feel lighter.


This is usually the standard treatment for anxiety. This includes some form of psychotherapy like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This therapy aims at finding and reforming the negative thought patterns that result in anxiety attacks. This is basically aimed at helping to know and manage your body and the way that your mind reacts to some things which can trigger anxiety.

Another form of psychotherapy involves actually talking to a professional trained in mental health. This form of therapy aims at finding the cause of the anxiety and works towards finding possible ways of coping with this disorder. This method involves having actual sessions to help explore what the possible causes are.


This method is usually combined with therapy. There are several kinds of medications that can help with the treatment of anxiety. These medications usually help to reduce or control some or all of the mental and physical symptoms that are known to be attributed to anxiety. Some of these medications are:

  • Tricyclic
  • Anti-depressants
  • Benzodiazepines

The use of medication in the treatment of anxiety is something that needs to be controlled as many of these drugs have addictive tendencies, and so stopping them may lead to experiencing withdrawal symptoms. These drugs should only be administered and taken on prescription in order to avoid cases of addiction.

The treatment of anxiety is mainly focused on making lifestyle adjustments, psychotherapy, and the use of medications. However, because anxiety manifests differently in different people, forms of treatment would differ from one person to the other.

Many times, during the onset of anxiety, self-treatment is very effective; however, if this does not seem to be helping, then there is a need to consult with a doctor for further treatment.
