Hair Frizz

We all love summer with its sunny days and ocean breezes. What we don’t love is the dry frizzy hair that often comes with it. Dry, brittle, lifeless hair isn’t cute. Here are five easy and affordable ways you can fight hair frizz, while still enjoying the sunshine this summer.

5 Tips for Fighting Hair Frizz

Give it a break – One of the best things you can do for your hair, not only in the summer, but all year round is to give it a rest from your regular styling routine. Let it air dry, don’t use the curling iron, don’t straighten it. Just let it be. Giving it a break from shampooing is also important. Go a few days between washing. This allows your hair’s natural oils to hydrate.

Brush– Brushing your hair regularly spreads its natural oils evenly through the rest of your hair. At night after brushing I also like to spritz my ends with my homemade conditioner, for some additional hydration. See recipe here.

Protect – Spray a leave in conditioner on your hair before jumping in the pool or spending the day in the sun. The leave-in conditioner will create a barrier and give you a little extra protection. A great option is Pravana Intense Therapy Leave-In Treatment 10.1 oz (Around $18 on Amazon). This leave in treatment is fantastic.

You can also use as a thermal protectant, before styling your hair. Added bonus: NEVO products do not contain any sulfates, phthalates, parabens, or propylene glycol. They are all also 100% vegan, 100% biodegradable, and 5% of all sales go to City of Hope to aid in the fight against cancer.

Deep Condition – I like to deep condition my hair at least once a week, when I have some time to just hang out around the house. I make my hair mask, so I know it is all natural and fresh for maximum benefits. After applying the mask generously to my hair, I wrap it in a warm towel and let it sit for an hour or so, while I hang out around the house. I then just wash and style it as usual. I have really long hair, and a lot of it, so if yours is more on the short side you could cut this recipe in half. Also pre-wash if you have a lot of product build-up.

2 Tbsp. Organic Cold Pressed Coconut Oil

2 Tbsp. organic Raw Manuka Honey

½ c. Organic Castor Oil

3-4 drops of your favorite essential oil for fragrance

I have also started adding 1 NEVO Hydra Pearls . These little capsules are full of Babassu and Brazil nut oil, which are both extremely rejuvenating for dehydrated hair.

Heat one cup of water on the stove, but do not allow to boil. Remove the pot from the fire and place a mug or glass jar inside the center of the water. Place all of the ingredients inside the glass mug or jar and allow to warm. If your coconut oil is solid, you may need to let pot simmer for 30 seconds with the mug and the ingredients inside. Remove the mug or jar with a baking mitt so as not to burn your hands. Test temperature of the oils to avoid burning your scalp. Apply oils throughout hair frizz. For best results, wrap with a warm towel or a clean shower cap. Sit for 20 minutes to an hour.

Hair Frizz ProductShield – Sun baked hair can be very dry and brittle. But making UV protection for your hair is easier than you’d think. Simply dilute 2 teaspoons of your favorite natural SPF 30 sunscreen with one cup of water. Using a spray bottle, spray the product into your damp hair before styling. For additional protection, try misting your mixture on throughout the day or add a straw hat.

Keeping your hair hydrated and protected will prevent it from being frizzy, hair frizz, brittle, and dull. It will also prevent breakage, allowing your hair to grow longer and stronger. Give these tips a try this summer, and keep your hair looking amazing.
