Chris rarely wears makeup, so my job was to create an interesting makeup look that was “barely there.” She wanted polish, not drama. And she wanted it done with all natural products. Here’s how I did it.

Todra…just getting back from Germany and saw your post with the video. Thank you for giving me your special treatment, and I LOVE the music for the segment! Love all the tips you gave! In reading through the posts, I had to laugh at the comment about a face that's "seen a bit of life." Ain't it the truth! Thanks again. Kudos to HBP.

Thanks, A.D. I'm glad you stopped back in to read my replies. No worries about voicing a concern or an observation. I'm happy for the engaging conversation. As for Chris's face, isn't she great! She's a friend and I've always told her she has great angles. Those cheek bones are wonderful. And she's very comfortable in her skin, which always makes a woman more attractive.

  3. A.D. says:

OH! And I totally forgot to say one of the first things that came to mind for me. I was thrilled to see you using a subject that isn't a fresh-faced 16 year old. (Nothing against 16 year olds at all, honestly, but they have the beauty of youth going for them and don't realize it.) It's nice to see the effect of a make-up style on a person whose face has, let us say, seen a bit of life and isn't ashamed of it.

  4. A.D. says:

Having looked awful in a fair number of photographs that I *thought* my make-up was perfect for, I can understand what you mean about the camera being the culprit, and I hadn't considered that her ear just might not be tanned. I just saw what seemed like a very definite demarcation where that strand of hair fell in front of her ear.

As I said, I do like the effect overall. I'm one of those people, much like Chris I would imagine, that likes just a touch of enhancement for the features. If I put on much more than that myself, I feel clownish, so I appreciated your light touch with the colors, Todra. :)

Thanks, Victorious. Glad you liked it. We have others scheduled. Check in often.

I don't even really care about cameras or technology too much. This makeup was great. I'm one of those girls that don't wear much if any but there are times I really need to put on a "face". I think I could confidently apply this look to my face. Thanks for this post. I'm looking forward to see what Healthy Beauty Project will post next. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Brass Monkey with Envy over top.

  8. Rin says:

But the important thing is that you didn't tell me what eyeshadow colors you used.

  9. Todra Payne says:

Rin, you're right. A big part of it is equipment and lighting. We're working on upping the quality of what we're shooting with. Equipment is expensive. It's all a step-by-step process. Just to clarify, Chris wasn't wearing any bronzer and the foundation is the exact same color as her face when you see it in person. Shadows and Hi Def all play into it. We'll be posting another one in a week or two. Tell us what you think!

  10. Rin says:

Not to interrupt but I will anyway. A.D, while it does look like the color is off for the foundation, please know that working with hi-def video and even just digital cameras is much much different than working in real life. What Todra's naked eye saw is going to be a world of difference to what the camera picks up. Since technology is getting better, it's getting easier to see teeny details and slight color differences especially with make-up. It's kind of a pain in the butt for camera operators and make-up/wardrobe personnel alike. I headed up a media team to launch a website's first webcast series and it was all hi-def. We had to actually re-shoot the entire pilot because what looked like perfect make up to the naked eye, looked HORRIBLE on the screen from the camera. They all looked like the little orange guys from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's quite annoying to get that all figured out.

  11. Rin says:

Oh my god. I love the eye shadow. What Sweet Libertine colors were those? I probably have them but tell me just in case I need to order more.

She looks awesome. I bet her husband thanked you for that one eh?

  12. Todra Payne says:

A.D. Thanks for commenting. I totally see what you’re talking about. But Chris was actually really tanned on her face, while her ear (and her neck), which isn’t exposed to the sun like the rest of her face, was lighter. I was matching her face. You should always match the darker areas or your face will look ghostly.

  13. A.D. says:

I rather like the end effect and the light touch of color it adds. However, it looks like you may have started off with a base that was off color or some sort of bronzer? In the middle of the video when the right eye is being done, there's a startling contrast between the skin in front of her ear and the cheek. I just think she might have looked better with her own skin tone.

We'd love to hear your thoughts!
