I got in at midnight last night from a five day stint in sunny Orlando, Florida. I was flown down to speak at the Natural Hair and Beauty Expo, where I met hundreds of amazing women and teens. Besides joyfully communicating the message of choosing healthier beauty products, I was also blissful to have missed the snow dump on the Northeast.
I flew out the day before the storm. Don’t hate me. The sunny, 75-degree days were a needed respite from the autumn briskness in my home city, Philadelphia. But my hair and skin weren’t quite sure how to act. I’d been using products to add extra moisture to my locks as the weather shifts to colder temperatures. And my beauty routine included a thicker, richer night cream.
Naturally curly, ethnic hair gets very dry in colder weather (as does my skin). But in Orlando, and beach side further south where I went to visit with friends, my hair routine was thrown off course.

Speaking at Teen Workshop
My curls were still intact, but they drew so close to my head, I thought they were scared! And the roots puffed up, which was actually nice because that made my hair look thicker. But overall, I looked a bit wild.
Then there’s my skin. Wow. I reviewed the video footage from the expo and I look like I’ve been rubbing pork chops on my face (and the lighting was something from a horror movie, but whatever). I absolutely love my current face moisturizer, but I had to put it away for this trip. As a matter of fact, my skin “glistened” so much, I washed my face with a bar soap (something I’d ordinarily never do) to try to “soak up” some of the shine.
Overall, I guess I looked okay. And of course, the producers of the expo didn’t pay me to come because of how I look, but because of my expertise. I realize that. But you know how it is as a female. We don’t want to represent ourselves badly.
While I was in Florida, two other companies requested I speak at their events, and I booked one almost immediately. So, I’m guessing I wasn’t too scary with my puffy hair and greasy face. But before my other talks/workshops, I’ve got to work out the whole traveling beauty routine.

Down time
Climate can throw everything off.
Have you had to make drastic switches to your beauty routine when you travel?
Do you have advice to share?
