The Pink Report, an annual cosmetic industry trends report conducted by The Benchmarking Group, announced that “71% of women shop for beauty and personal care items at Walmart every week.” I have to admit, I was a little shocked by the numbers. No one I know personally shops at Walmart for beauty products. Toilet paper. Trash bags. Maybe. But not makeup or skincare.

Of course, with statistics, there is always information we, as the readers, don’t know. I’d like to know where they conducted the study and what were the socio-economic groups included in the survey. Was it a random cross section of America or a very targeted area and group of women?

The information on The Benchmarking Group’s website said they gathered the information from women ages 18-60+ who regularly shop at Walmart. (I think that’s an important bit of information). The ethnic and geographic makeup of their sample group (2,000 women) is said to represent real world stats. Women were asked about their beauty buying habits through an online survey. Shop alongs were also conducted.

It sounds like the research group was thorough, but the way the original statement was made, it seemed as though 71% of the American female population was rushing to Walmart to purchase the hottest new shade of eye shadow. That’s not exactly true.

But this report peaked my curiosity. What kinds of beauty products does Walmart offer? I took a trip to Walmart to see what’s in their beauty aisles. Most of what I encountered were the usual drug store brands I don’t use because of the ingredients list. But I did find one brand that made me take notice: Noah’s Naturals.

Whenever a bottle has “natural” anywhere on it, my radar goes up. It’s so profitable right now to claim your cosmetic brand is healthy, natural, organic, blah, blah, blah. And no organization in America is going to stop you, even if it’s hogwash. So I picked up the bottle for Noah’s Naturals and flipped it over to the ingredients. Although I ran into a few 25 letter ingredients, when I looked them up, they were harmless chemicals needed to extend shelf life. But no parabens or other toxic listings.

Each product I checked really was relatively healthy. I can’t speak to the effectiveness of the brand as I have not used it. But it’s exciting to see an affordable skincare option in a chain store. I’d never have guessed. The only reason I didn’t purchase skincare from Noah’s Naturals is I really like the indie skin care brands I’m currently using. But I am considering a bottle of Noah’s Naturals Organics Stress Relief Massage Oil (affiliate link). An 8 oz bottle sells for only $8.50 – much, much cheaper than the oils I’m currently using.

Do you (or would you) shop for beauty items at Walmart? If so, how important is it for you to have access to natural products?

We'd love to hear your thoughts!
