USDA launches new certification program

USDA Biobased Certification

As natural and organic beauty brands struggle to differentiate their products from the other products on the shelves (or the Internet), USDA Organic certification has become the gold standard. Now the USDA is launching a second certification program – Biobased. This new label and certification is part of the USDA’s BioPreferred program which was launched in 2002 as a way to encourage biobased (originally derived from living matter, and sometimes biodegradable) products in the commercial market.

In order for brands to qualify for the certification, 25 percent of the finished product must contain biobased content. This may increase as the program grows. The label will be seen on beauty products such as lip gloss and hand cream beginning in the spring 2011. Now consumers wishing to purchase products that are deemed environmentally friendly will have a standard to access their purchases.
