A few months ago I was the Keynote speaker at the Green Beauty Symposium at Rutger’s University where I met a representative from Johnson & Johnson. We chatted for quite some time about product purity and he assured me and others at the symposium that J&J was committed to creating some of the most non-toxic products on the market.
Hmmmm.
Recently, The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics accused J&J of creating baby shampoo for the US market that contained cancer causing ingredients. It seemed the same baby products are offered in other countries, but are formulated without the toxic ingredients. This is a more common occurrence than you’d think. As certain ingredients are not allowed in cosmetics sold in the EU, many of the brands we know reformulate products (making them safer) for international purchase. That’s completely messed up.
But anyway…
Johnson & Johnson has answered the Campaign’s report with a written commitment to remove the toxic ingredients in their baby lines worldwide over the next two years. This means quaternium-15 and other formaldehyde-releasing preservatives will no longer be in J&J’s baby products.
They have already removed phthalates (a reproductive toxin) from all their baby products (this includes fragrance).
As exciting as these changes are, none of this will affect their adult lines which include Aveeno and Neutrogena. You’ve been warned.
