Earlier this month, The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and South Texas Poison Control warned consumers that a face cream, Crema Aguamary, may contain dangerously high levels of mercury.
It is reported that the cream is causing abdominal pains and tremors in women who used it. Mercury contamination was passed along to two of the women’s unborn children. When tested, Crema Aguamary showed inorganic mercury concentrations of up to 131,000 ppm. The allowable amount in cosmetics is 1 ppm as set forth by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Thus far, more than 20 cases of mercury poisoning linked to the use of this product have been reported in towns surrounding the Texas/Mexico border. The cream is made in Mexico, but was brought across the border by consumers. It is expected that more cases of mercury poisoning may be reported in other US markets.
Symptoms of mercury poisoning include skin rashes, sores in the mouth, memory loss, mood changes, high blood pressure, weight loss and extreme fatigue. Mercury poisoning can also damage the kidneys and nervous system.
If you are currently using this product, it is highly recommended that you discontinue use and possibly seek medical attention.
