Advertising can be a slippery slope of sloppy ethics. Just look at the recent Facebook/Bursen-Marstella debacle. Now, it seems a very big beauty brand is being accused of some not-so-above-board actions in their ads.
According to supermodel, Caroline Louise Forsling, Estèe Lauder used a test snap shot of her without makeup (and without her permission) in an ad for their Plantscription Serum (an anti-aging product marketed under their Origins brand). In the ad, “flaws” on Caroline’s face are pointed out with arrows in a “before” shot, while her face is shown nearly flawless in an “after” shot said to be a dramatization of results after using the product for four weeks.
The model claims she has never used the product. And her career has been harmed by the ad stating that the product was tested on women 45-60 years old. Public record shows Caroline Louise Forsling to be 35 years old.
It’s also pretty evident that the lighting was changed from the “before” shot to the “after” shot.
The Swedish model says she’s not getting modeling gigs because the ad markets her as “old”. She is suing the cosmetic giant for $2Million. We hope she wins.
What’s your take on beauty industry advertising? Should advertising have stricter guidelines to work within? Have you ever bought a product based on a “before” and “after” shot?

Estee Lauder is filled with all sorts of ingredients that aren’t the best for your skin, but aside from that, the model is not “dumb”. She, like consumers, expect some level of truth in advertising. To change a cosmetic ad to make it look like your product is doing more than it is, in unethical. Thankfully, consumers are protesting this practice and we are getting closer to having advertising that shows the truth concerning a product, not a company’s false claims. Educating oneself is the first step in having an informed opinion.
I love estee lauder. I like them over any other makeup company. So this girl is dumb. Because that’s modeling, they do lots of things without permission that’s life. And she knew that going into this career. You don’t make choices, the company does. Idiot.
