Sarah Zahn, creator of Sugared Beauty, has more experience singing and dancing on riverboat cruises than she does making beauty products. But that doesn’t matter to her customer base, which is growing by the day. Sugared Beauty, a brand new bath & body company featuring sugar based body scrubs, has only been on the scene for two months, but the buzz is building.
Sarah, along with her husband Andrew, has been a full time actor and singer for most of her adult life. Her talent has taken her to theaters and riverboats all over the country – a year here, several months there.
But when the economy nosedived in 2008, the couple found themselves at a crossroad. “Suddenly those full time performing jobs I was used to were not as available,” Sarah says. “I couldn’t find work and as a result, I could not afford some of the things I normally bought – like skincare.”
Skin and body care has always been a big part of Sarah’s commitment to her craft. A blemish free complexion and youthful skin can sometimes be the tipping point for an actor on an audition, especially if they’ll be portraying a character younger than their own years.
To make sure she was only putting good stuff on her body, Sarah was buying strictly organic skincare (and eating organic foods, as well). But without steady income, paying for organic proved hard.
After much thought, Sarah decided to try her hand at making her own cosmetics. For two years she experimented with recipes and ingredients, determined not to use anything that wasn’t fresh and healthy. The result of her experiments is a delightful brand aptly named, Sugared Beauty.
Based on evaporated, unrefined, unprocessed and organic cane juice, Sugared Beauty is the body treat you’ve been waiting for. From the enticing scents to the luxurious feel of the oils, this body scrub is obviously better than the preservative laden counterparts found at chain stores.
The reason behind the high quality finished product is, of course, the quality of the ingredients. “I use cold pressed, unrefined, organic virgin coconut oil. I use pure vanilla extract. And pure cocoa,” Sarah says. “I don’t put ‘fragrances’ in my products. I use organic essential oils. And I don’t use artificial preservatives.”
The main ingredient, the sugar, is also purposefully fair trade. Sarah says she wants to use as many fair trade ingredients as possible because it’s not just about the product. It’s about the process, as well.
The food grade ingredients and the dessert theme have gathered a loyal following of women with a sweet tooth. “I have customers tell me they understand why I instruct them not to eat the products!” Sarah says, laughing. “They smell so good.”
Warm Sugar Cookie, Chocolate Cake, After Dinner Buttermint and Sugared Lemonaid are the four scents included in the line at the moment. But Sarah plans on expanding to include other sweets inspired scents. She’ll also soon offer products designed specifically for the face and all natural body lotions. Everything is made fresh to order and has a shelf life of six months.
I doubt anyone would have a jar past a few weeks.
Sarah is planning out the future of Sugared Beauty, with the goal of distribution through specialty chains like Whole Foods. Until that happens, you can order them directly from Sugared Beauty’s website.
