Beach weddings are perfect for couples who love the outdoors and want a less formal wedding. And the pictures are almost guaranteed to be amazing. If you’re planning a beach wedding, take into consideration how the sun and sand will reflect the colors and textures of your makeup.
As a rule of thumb, when I do makeup for beach weddings, I stay away from too much shimmer on the eyes. Reflective makeup with the sun glaring down on it can create unnaturally bright spots on your face when photographed. Brightly hued, extremely glossy lip color can become the entire focus of the shot when photographed on a beach. The same lip color may be gorgeous shot in late afternoon in a lawn-covered backyard.
Most brides (and even some makeup artists) don’t take location and lighting into account when styling a makeup look. How something looks in the mirrors in a salon may not be what you get on a beach. Daylight, with its blue tint, is quite different from incandescent or (goodness, no!) florescent lighting.
Ask questions like, “Will this be okay in sunlight?” or “Is there a lip color that I can put on top of this to deepen it as the evening progresses?”
If you’re going the DIY route, be sure not to apply too much foundation for your beach wedding. Depending on the brand and the oiliness of your skin, you may have a meltdown mid ceremony. Don’t forget some mineral powder foundations are quite light reflective. If you can see sparkly particles in abundance when you shake your container, you may want to go with a different brand for your big day.
If you can get away with it, skip foundation altogether. Opt for a heavily pigmented under eye concealer to combat any dark circles and a tinted moisturizer. Then add a high impact, but no color product like false lashes. You can get miles of glam out of false lashes while avoiding the “color and shimmer overload.” If you’d really like a burst of color someplace on your face, consider a densely colored lip stain or a matte lipstick. You’ll love how you look in your pictures.
