In makeup’s recent past, neutral lips have ruled, with subtle, shimmery glosses being every woman’s best friend. While it’s still perfectly acceptable to opt for a neutral lip (especially when sporting a dramatic eye), bright, bold lip color has made a serious comeback.
Not only have fire-engine reds, hot pinks, and soda-pop oranges been spotted on lips all over the international fashion runways, but plenty of women have taken this look to the streets, adding unexpected pops of color to their faces on a daily basis.
I’ll admit, even I, a die-hard fashion fanatic and trend hunter, was skeptical of the resurgence of bold lip color initially. I’ve avoided lipstick for the majority of my life, likely because I’ve been subconsciously associating it with my mother and the brown-based pink she’s been wearing forever—but I’ve been converted.
I think the reason the trend is sticking is because women are realizing that the right color can instantly wake up the face and make it look more radiant than a neutral ever could.
While younger women are likely more comfortable experimenting with vivid brights, they’re not the only ones who can pull them off. There is, indeed, a red and a pink hue to complement every skin tone and every age group. The challenge is to find the color that suits you best. To simplify the process, follow these skin tone-specific guidelines:
- Porcelain skin with pink undertones: choose blue-based colors, like berry reds and fuchsia pinks.
- Olive or light skin with yellow undertones: select warm shades, like orangey reds and corals (which, by the way, is the hottest shade this season).
- Dark skin: select deeper hues, like burgundy and ruby reds, dark fuchsias and deep purples.

Making the initial transition from a neutral lip to a bright color can be intimidating, so I encourage you to ease into it gradually and see what you think. You can start incorporating lip color into your makeup routine by first trying out a tinted balm, like Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm in Blushing.
If you like where this is going, you might consider moving to a sheer lipstick, such as Afterglow Cosmetics Organic Lip Love Lipstick in Tango.
Once you’ve fully embraced the statement lip trend and you’re looking to add a little extra oomph, there’s nowhere left to go but to a highly pigmented lipstick, like Primitive Natural Makeup Lipstick in Belize or Priia Cosmetics About to Pout lip gloss in Raspberry Smash or Dragonfruit.
At the end of the day, it comes down to testing several shades until you find a winner—and once you do, you’ll be hopping on the lip color bandwagon right along with me. Happy experimenting, fellow beauty lovers.
