To my absolute delight, we are full swing into sun and sand season. I couldn’t be happier. The beach is my idea of Heaven. But as I look through mainstream magazines for inspiration on must-have beach bag swag, I’m terribly disappointed with the chemical-laden suggestions.
So here’s the HBP list for beach loving girls who want natural & non-toxic treats. I’ve included budget conscious brands, along with posh products that hold their own at the most elegant of beach affairs.
Sunscreen, as we all know, is a non-negotiable. But finding one that isn’t filled with junk that we’d rather avoid hasn’t always been easy. Thankfully, more brands are offering non-toxic sunscreen, both in budget-friendly categories and high-end options.
Our faves? Badger, SPF30 at just $14, is a great buy. It contains 60% organic ingredients, is water resistant and offers protection against UVB and UVA rays. I like the non-scented one because I already wear perfume. I don’t need scent from my sunscreen.
Then there’s Soleil Organique 100% Mineral Sunblock for Body, SPF 45. At $45, this is definitely a luxe item, but it’s so wonderful. Packed with green tea extract, organic shea butter, almond oil and aloe vera, this is the real deal. Protects against UVA and UVB rays. Oh, and the packaging makes me swoon.
Although blessed with naturally glowing brown skin, I can understand my lighter friends’ obsession with bronzer. Done well, bronzer gives pale skin just the right pop of color and sheen. And it’s way healthier than sun baking. Our team’s most recommended natural bronzers are:
Priia-Cosmetics Vacation in a Jar is simply divine. As a makeup artist, I love it’s understated, natural hue that works on nearly every skin tone. No garish glitter or fake orange coating. And it contains Kosher Rice Powder, which soothes and cools summer skin. At just $12.50, everyone can afford this vacation.
100% Pure’s Cocoa Pigmented Bronzer comes in a gorgeous range of colors (from very light to a rich dark brown) suitable for all skin tones. And the cool part is the hues are created with coffee, berries, tomatoes and of course, cocoa. Add acai, black tea and avocado butter and you’ve got a bronzer with anti-oxidant power and great skin moisturizers. $25
I’m not one for doing a full face of makeup for the beach, but I do need a little something pretty for the pucker. For a fun, summery copper/peach color that works on my skin tone (and lighter), I like Etniq’s Spiced Peaches lip gloss. As a bonus, the shea/cocoa butter mix leaves lips baby soft. And at just $5, you’ll have lots of cash left for a lobster roll.
Even if you can’t get to Fiji, Cozumel or Rio for vacation, you can wear them on your lips. Primitive Makeup, an award winning natural brand offers their interpretation of these exotic destinations in alluring lip glosses. Six beautifully pigmented, but never sticky shades leave lips irresistible. And if you purchase their Belize or Tahiti, a percentage of the sales go directly to the Jane Goodall Institute.
I’m all about taking my eco-chic beach trip to the next level with this beach bag made from recycled sails. 360 Degree Sailcloth bags unite nautical style with an earth-friendly edge. Starting at $94.95.
What beach trip would be complete without an enviable pair of sunglasses? Indulge your fashion edge without abandoning your ideals with Kayu sunglasses. Made from sustainable bamboo, straw and shells, these glasses are edgier than one would guess. And with every pair of sunglasses sold, $20 is donated toward one sight-restoring surgery through Unite for Sight. $180 per pair.
No products or money were given in exchange for this story. At various times, we have tried these products (except Kayu’s glasses) and wanted to include them in this story.
